Welcome to the BC Music Educators' Association!

Greetings BC Music Educators!

The BC Music Educators' Association (BCMEA) are one of 32 Provincial Specialist Associations (PSA) under the BC Teachers' Federation. PSAs are channels for members to exchange ideas on research, teaching strategies, curriculum development, and other shared interests. Along with being a voice for all music educators, we offer a monthly newsletter, an online journal, and our annual BCMEA Conference in October.

Updates from BCMEA During COVID-19

Teachers - if you are looking for resources, please go to our Music Resource Room page!

Good morning everyone,

As experts learn more and more about COVID-19 and its transmission we can expect updates to policies and recommendations that reflect that understanding. As such, recently an update came from Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, specifically regarding aerosols and how COVID can be transmitted through those tiny droplets lingering in the air.

We are so fortunate to belong to a proactive community in music education that has invested the time and money into research. Fortunately the information that was updated in our national documents is information we already knew and have integrated into both our BCMEA Guidelines for Music Education in BC During COVID-19 as well as the BC Provincial COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidelines for K-12 Settings developed over the summer. Specifically, this is why we speak about air exchange rates and the importance of taking breaks more often in our classrooms. Having this information and following this advice allows for the safest practices in music rooms across out province and for aerosols and droplets to fall and collect on the floor.

If you have any further questions or concerns please reach out to us. We’re happy to help.

Take care and be safe,
Janet Wade
BCMEA 1st Vice President
